I jump on the bandwagon when i started to see the outcome of the petsmart RT and Kamfa. I bought the guy/gal back in mid December at 1" and I am not positive if its a red texas or kamfa or RT/kamfa. I tried to ID it thru the sticky petsmart kamfa thread but couldn't find one close to it. I decided to post this up to see the what the experts say. Thanks.

Very nice. It looks like a rainbow king kamfa. It also looks to be female

Thanks. It will be great if it turns out to be a rainbow king kamfa but time will tell when it grows bigger. I did notice that there was the black spot on the dorsal fin and thought it to be a female. So I had it flare on a mirror and I see a pointy wee wee instead of a large round tube. Is there such a thing where males can get the black spot on the dorsal fin?

Yes there are males in flowerhorns and some of the hybrids made with them with the black dorsal spot. So I keep seeing people say flowerhorn on all these petsmart rt and many truly are but think about this. If a person used a fader type flowerhorn x texas to try and produce even low quality rt some of the fry would look like each parent and many would be a combination of the two. Some could/would be true to looks rt in color (fade), pearling and texas body type, some would look pearled flowerhorn in all ways. The reality is a good quality rt will come most easy through several selective bred generations. What petsmart is offering many of us if we are selective is the first step in making one of our own. This means maybe 80% of what they are selling do not carry most the basic traits needed so the reason of being selective. When i go to the one here that sells them after each shipment i look for pearling and good true red under color and fins. Most that they bring in are pretty small so do not expect them showing signs of fading but if they are that is good. Next i look for traits that lean towards female for the best chance of it being fertile for breeding. Last is body type because this can change it seems almost daily until they get big enough and if the wrong type ( more towards flowerhorn) I just plan on pairing it up to a pure texas if i get it. I am leaning towards using true red based flowerhorns to produce true red colored rt or at least very dark rusty orange.

Your fish is very nice with loads of potential either way and for the price they charge is a steal.

So here are two examples of mine one from petsmart and one produced from a pairing of a friends flowerhorn to a texas. They look pretty close to each other considering they are each only one example of however many were produced in each of their batches. Again no matter how they end up they are being paired to either pure texas or high percentage texas hybrids for body type and even better pearling. One of them is starting to fade now at just over 2.5 inches. It started in the area around the tail spot on one side of the fish and hopefully progresses nicely. Once i get my future rt where i want them the last trait i will work on is age of start of fading. I believe this is possible as i have seen lines of red devils and midevil that many of the fry peel at just about an inch. This trait would allow hard culling at a younger age to give the keepers the most space as possible the soonest.

onefowl1-Good to know that some males can have black spots of their dorsal fin too. Great info. that you are giving me since I am a newbie at raising this type of fish. Just peace of mind to know what fishes were cross to get what I got for future reference. I am testing my luck out to see if I will get a stunner like the other members here got. Can't wait to see what it will look like when it reaches adult hood.
Your examples looks good, can't really tell they are two different parents. Good luck on you selective breeding to get a masterpiece fish of your liking. It will be great to produce a fish of my liking but I just don't have the time and money to get it there. I will follow your progress if you it posted.

Good update. Fish is looking good.
