no, they feed on totally different things ... plecos like algae wafers, and the green algae on the walls of the tank or plants ... SAEs like to eat hair algae and nibble on plant leaves ... also, plecos tend to feed at the bottom, while SAEs are mid- to top-range feeders

they shouldn't compete at all
 
CAEs can get very aggressive as they get older, SAEs are a different fish, that might be why you thought they were aggressive.

actually there are close to 10 different sub species of SAE only one of them will eat BBA. The ones with barbs and a black spot on the belly are the ones you want. Many of the other SAE's won't touch BBA

there are several different fish that are mis-identified as SAE, but they are not sub-species

I have owned scores of true SAE -- crossocheilus siamensis -- over the years, and they have never failed to be dilligent eaters of BBA / hair algaes ...
