ID this Gar 7-8"

I bought this gar today from my LFS and i asked them what kind of gar this was they had no clue so can anyone that has experience or any clue tell me what this is?

Not a true gar, some sort of characin, other than that I'm not sure.

Well, I can tell you that it's definitely not a true gar i.e. a Lepisosteid.

Based on the caudal fin and overall appearance, it appears to be some form of characin, so try posting this in the "Other Characins" sub-forum of the "Other Monster Fish" forum.

Just for the record, I despise the typical LFS's use of only common names in the case of these fishes...
