They were right, and it's not a gar. It's a South American spotted pike characin - Boulengerella maculata.

It's going in a 46 untill it gets a little bigger. I may get one or 2 more. I really like this little guy lol...
would it do well in a planted tank? What is their temperment like?

There pretty peaceful and they do like to school. They shoudn't hurt anything unless they can eat it.
