Picked this guy up at a lfs today. The lfs owner said that it was brought in because the original owner had it with a dovii and they fought all the time (ummm duh!). So he's beat up a little and had a cherry wound on his right side and some torn fins (Got him supper cheep for this reason). The lfs said it was a red carpintis. Im pretty sure thats not what it is so..... I know its hard to say that its definitely a mix of "this + that" but a ball park would be cool. Hes about 10" or 11" (eyeballing). I thought maybe a carpintis x trimac.. IDK, you tell me. What ever it is, its a beautifull fish so I had to have it! :D

Disclaimer: Not at all experienced with hybrids outside of one Flowerhorn I owned 4 years back.

Keep in mind, hes a little stressed. at this point he had been in the tank maybe an hour. Thanks in advance!

Woah, he looks very beat up and seems like he had swollen lips multiple times already. Also very skinny fish. It looks to be cross with a texas here if I'm not wrong, so much patterns on its body. Overall, great rescue!

He looks very malnurished.
My guess is Carpintis X ZZ Red dragon(maybe trimac), but there is no way to be sure unless you know the breeder.

Yeah, I know I'll never be sure but its nice to get some validation on my guess work :D. Thanks for thoughts!

Doesn't really have a flowerhorn look to me so I am thinking it could simply just be carpintis X trimac. Some updates once the fish is settled better will probably help though.

Yeah, thats what I was thinking. Once his wounds heal and I get him a little beefier, I'll do an update.

if you dont mind me asking how much did you pay for it?

I talked him down to 30... you dont want to know what he wanted for it if it was in good condition.....

This is a nice looking $30 fish first off. But just by looking at the fish there are a couple traits that stick out that might help to identify parents or gentic line of breeding before this fish. This is all hypothetical mind you, but some easy to spot traits are...
1. Like Big_one said, the small pearling patterns resemble that of a Texas.
2. As FishingOut said, there seems to be some ZZ traits present IE. Drooping Tail which is common in most ZZ strains. And the extended pearling/coloration on all the fins, common with Texas and most ZZ.
3. Like you all have guessed, Trimac is also my main guess as to its closest 'True Breed' parent becasue of the coloration of the face, size/shape/location/color of the eye, and also a close resemblence of the 3spot 'flowerline' on this guy (for lack of a better word) that most Trimac have.
4. And finally the barred pattern on the fish resemble some Amphi. barred cichlids (barred Midas) which could be possible because most FH strains start with an Amphi. Cichlid. And this could just be an attempt by a breeder to get a cool look for his fish.

Overall its a great pick-up, but I personally feel it is a novice attempt to create a FH through either purposful breeding between a wide variety of Cichlids, and some already established flowerhorns. Or an accidental breeding of what the breeder though was pure strains of some fish, but like most modern world Cichlids today, is just a hybrid.

*note I am NOT a pro breeder myself, I am also a novice with FH breeding so that is why I think this is a novice attempt. Nobody but a select few are going to be able to create great FHs.

I hope everything turns out well with this guy, he should eventually be able to make some really nice offspring. Good Luck.
