I'm not a cichlid guy but my buddy just dismantled his tank and dropped off this guy with a couple of other South Americans. Can anyone please tell me what kind of severum this guy is?

Rotkiel

It's not pure rotkeil, because a rotkeil severum only has 8 bars and this one has 9 like regular greens, H. efasciatus. It could be a cross of the two.

Hmm. I've never heard of a "true" rotkiel as only having 8 stripes

Heros sp. rotkeil and Heros sp. Inirida have eight bars, all other severums (efasciatus, notatus, severus) have nine.

Interesting. Just did a quick Google search(under Rotkiel) and noticed a lot of different number of stripes variations...some were like 5, 6, 7....not just 8 or 9. Is there such a thing as oddball patterns in severums?

That's because in adult coloration, some of the bars fade when the fish is in a comfortable, resting color pattern. The anterior bars sometimes disappear (the one through the eye, for instance) while the posterior bars will often only show as half bars. If you look at the juveniles before they develop adult coloration, or if you look at adults who are stressed, the full set of bars will show.

Also, the problem with Google Image search is that you are given pictures of all types of severums, not just rotkeil. That's because Google only bases its results on the names of files, and a lot of people mislabel stuff.

Here are some examples I made. The first two are pictures of my young rotkeils, the other three are examples I pulled from Google and labeled:

Cool! Good info

Okay so I have a rotkeil x green hybrid then must likely. I think I'll keep him and post pictures when God color develops if it comes in cool or unusual.
