The pet store I worked at sold Senegal bichirs for $10, and paid $30 for an "albino dinosaur eel" that they then held onto for 8 months until it died, because they refused to lower the price on it, insisting that it was something different, just because the wholesaler told them it was.
The petting zoo I worked at before that put a cannibalistic kingsnake in with some expensive corn snakes against warnings from people who own both snakes (me and another employee), because the person he bought it from assured him that it was a rare, expensive breed of corn snake, and would get along with his corns.
People get burned on their end, and won't admit that they don't actually have something special. Especially at a retail level, it's extremely common- someone has to pay for the screw up, and it sure as heck isn't gonna be the store. Either they get what they're asking for it, or they raise the prices on other things to compensate for the loss.
I'm not sure what it is, but it's a cool fish- if you want it, go for it. It's worth whatever you're willing to pay, if it's something you want.
