A full shed does not automatically mean healthy but yeah a recently caught wild animal is generally still in good health. Although it most likely has parasites that will deteriorate it very quickly in captivity if not treated. Also, because of their diet... you will most likely need to keep wormer on hand and treat for parasites regularly because you wont be able to get a steady supply of captive prey items that are less likely to carry parasites. Their diet, actually, is generally what makes them more difficult, worms, slugs, snails and other similar soft bodied prey, maybe small lizards, not sure how much reptile and amphibian life they eat. It looks pretty big in those photos so probably wont get to much larger. I would guess they probably need a warm spot of mid to high 80's with a cool side of mid 70's, but not sure on that. With a snake like this it would be best to provide as close to a natural environment as possible, mixtures of different soils and humidity gradients, bark and leaf litter, etc.
But really... the people on this site need to realize that you do not actually NEED to keep everything you find wondering the yard.....
I don't mean to pick on anyone specifically it's just that this site in particular has more threads like this one than any other forum I am on. I understand that sometimes there is no other way than to go with wild caught animals... Like I would personally love to work with coral snakes, because they are difficult to keep alive and healthy in captivity there are very VERY few people doing that so when the time comes I will most likely need to go with wild caught.
However thats not really the case with most people here. It's not a matter of passion for the species.... and that does apply to this thread as you didn't even know what the species was. It's simply just a snake you found and you want to keep it because you can. not really any reason other than that. I you want a snake...go out and get a snake from a store or breeder, something that is established and easy to care for (compared to something like a wild caught slug eater) don't just pull any snake out of the yard and expect it to be a good healthy captive.
