ID this texas cichlid for me please

visited my LFS and saw a batch of texas cichlids that were much darker with much more pronounced spots. This little guy is barely 2 inches.

the sign on the tank just said texas cichlids but they have been wrong before with their IDs so hopefully you guys can give me the correct ID for him.

I have spent half a day yesterday trying to get a better ID. There's just not much info on juveniles.

I'd say he looks like a normal carpinte.

To be honest that seems like a cyano, the pearls seems too small to be a carpintis and the worming on the face doesn't seem pronounce enough either. Could be a hybrid. Or, I could be wrong. How big/old is it?

its just about 2 inches long, I have no idea how old they are. I hope its a cyano...

Well for comparison here's my carpintis, which as you can see has a lot more worming and more spaced pearls, and it's approx. 3-4 inches.

thats a nice specimen, the pearls are larger on yours. Not sure if they converge with age of the fish.

No yeah mine's a H. carpintis, which is different from yours (if I'm correct), which is a H. cyanoguttatum(/carpintis hybrid).

Interesting pic. I've never seen a Cyano with the worming around the mouth before... at first glance it definitely looks more Cyano due to the smaller pearls and the color but that worming by the mouth is giving me second thoughts. Keep us updated. I'd like to see what this fish looks like in a few months.
