turtle i caught in florida for no reason id except to see how big they get

Looks like Apalone Ferox to me. (aka Florida softshell) You can expect this turtle to get around 50cm.

Yes, agreed. And yes they get big, and they will bite, and you'd be surprised how far back they can reach to bite you.

I saw one of them last time i was in sanibel. awesome looking turtle. Id love a softshell but just cant justify devoting a huge tank to a turtle that wont play nice

Yea they can snap a good distance behind them, we have a frest water pond at my work where they go to breed
