I am very new to keeping cichla, I have mine in a 90 gallon with an oscar. I got te cichla the other day and he is 6-7". He was sold to me as wild but I doubt he is. (how do I tell?) I am working on getting him to eat frozen instead of live food. I was wondering if anyone can give me an ID on him because he does seem to look like a monoculus to me but I am inexperienced with this wonderful type of fish and am struggling to ID it. I do however know how to keep the fish healthy, no problem there, tank is cycled and gets a 25% water change at least twice a week so nitrates stay below 20ppm. I wil be upgrading to a larger tank this summer and was wondering what would be a good height for the aquarium as I will have one custom made. On my 90 gallon it seems like a waste to have 24" high is there is only 18" width. Also, the cichla likes to hang around the heater and output for the filter facing downwards almost as if watching the other fish, is this normal? The oscar hasn't quite warmed up to him yet but he is much slower than the cichla so there doesn't really seem to be a problem there. Thankyou for your answers in advance. hmm well from the looks of it...im either going Cichla Ocellaris or Cichla Monoculus...need a clearer shots as it looks abit stressed. =] Also your 90 gallon would onlu last it about a couple of months (3-5 months) from what you said its quite big already...so you should be on the look out for a bigger tank soon to house it in full grown

how about a mungrel mix of monoc x ocell??

Ok, at first my cichla would eat thawed krill if I jigged it with thread. Now he won't eat anything... I am planning on getting him a friend as suggested but I have noticed something wrong with it. After a day of having it it had a small lesion by it tail area, just a small circle I atributed to him running into something but, now the lesion isn't a small circle but a line that is seeming to grow. http://i348.photobucket.com/albums/q350/CichlidDan/IMG_1977.jpg I have no idea what it is as I have never had a fish with this problem. Can anyone help me out here?

It also appears to be affecting the vent area of the fish, no so much the pinkishness, but more just a small loss of scales. The picture doesn't show this though. I am very concerned as I would hate to lose this wonderful fish. Also, I took a molly from the upstairs tank and threw it in. The pb ate it right up so I guess he is eating. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated, as I said, I would really truly be saddened if I lost this fish.

Sorry for all the replies, my water has a ph around 7.5 and the hardness coming out of the tap as stated by the city is 165mg/l of CaCO3. I am still learning and am not sure how this is rated. They say it is moderately hard. Is this suitable for a peacock bass? I have peatmoss that I could use to lower the ph if needed but am unsure with my water hardness how effective it would be. Very sorry for all the questions but I really want to provide the best environment possible for my pb.
