how can you tell it's a florida and not a spotted?

neither of these are diagnostics for telling the difference between a spotted and FL gar. if you got your gar from an LFS and it looks like the one pictured, there is a 99.9% chance it's a Florida gar--

yep. My Florida's have whiter bellies than my true spotted. The spotted has a speckled belly, which the Florida's never had (at least not while I've had them).

Pretty much, if you got it from an LFS, bet on it being a Florida gar. If you got it from E_americanus, then you know its a spotted ;).
