I just got a 400 gallon!!!! And I also got this sump that is 6' by 2' by 20". Any idea how I should set it up? Te intake is on the left in the picture, the water is to overflow this chaimber, then there is the middle section, then the return section has a opening at the bottom for the water to travel through. Notice the return pump is external and it actually plumber through the tank.image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg

I have no idea but what ever you do definitly show pics and updates as you go

J jaws7777 That is a salt water sump. I think by the looks of it you will have a difficult time getting it to flow the the media. It I designed to overflow into the pump side of the sump flow threw the live rock section and into the last section which would be the skimmer with the pvc pipe going to the pump.
bbradtmiller bbradtmiller The best way I can see the sump working is to drill some more holes in the first baffle so it can flow threw your media static media evenly or make a k1 sump out of it.

Yep. It can still overflow in to a submerged media area in the middle. I don't understand that pipe running the length.

Seems they have entry for mechanical such as socks, then flowing into the middle large chamber perhaps refugium/biological filtration. That last chamber on he right may be just serves as a final/staging where the return pump draws from?

I am guessing here, but perhaps the pipe extends from what would have been to an emergency drain? If for any reason the other drains become clogged and the stand-by was needed, it would by pass the filtration flow and go directly to the final chamber. This helps to get attention, and helps ensure the pump is pushing back up? Better to return unfiltered water than no water and risk overflow.

I have something with the same concept (but not running through my sump).

That's an interesting sump for sure. Never seen one laid out like that with the pipe runng through the sump. I'm guessing that you did not see the system up and running hence the reason you are asking questions about it. Maybe a good look at the stand will give a clue as to how the sump was utilized. Possibly you can find a manufacture mark on the sump and gain some info there. If you're going to use the system with freshwater just cut the pipe out and plug the holes. Looks like you're going to need filter sock holders or a rack to place filter floss, and maybe some trial runs with media in the sump to see how it flows. Good luck! Keep us posted

Thanks everybody for your input!! It was set up on a 300gallon salt water, but the
Guy I got it from did not use this sump, so he paired it with another 400 gallon tank he had for sale. So I did not see it up and running. However I do have one theory for the pipe going through. If he had it set up where his external pump would not fit next to the last chaimber on the right, ten he ran the pipe all the way through so that the pump was still pulling water from th correct chaimber, yet the pump sits outside the sump closest to the first chaimber.

So I am contiplating holes in the first chaimber so that I can set that up for filter socks with filter pad u see them...with possible bio balls under that, then insert a new wall in the middle section so that the water has to flow over that, then have a new chaimber for some k1 media, then put a wall to cover the gap under the last chaimber and drill some holes in the middle of that wall to let te water flow I to the last chaimber where the weirdly long PVC pipe will suck it
Back through the sump and pump it into the tank.

Thoughts??

The pump is a Aqua sea dolphin external pump. Just out of curiosity, anybody know what a sump this size and a pump like that would typically cost?

Well the new holes I was thinking about drilling would be at the bottom of the first baffle and then towards the middle of the last baffle?
