If I were to build an inclosed storage shelf so I can house 5-6 tanks in a garage would I need to use special wood on the inside of it? I'm not sure if all the water evaporation would cause any harm, mildew or something like that.

You can use a waterproof mold/mildew resistant primer like Zinsser or Kilz. Both are easy to find at home improvement stores.

Didn't even think of something like that, now all I need to do is draw out my idea and get started! I'm hoping to have this done by the new year while on my winter break. We will see.

how do you plan on heating in and cooling it....i see you in VA and i know it gets pretty cold and not HOT but i know it can get in the 90s with 90% humidity....just curious

With the construction of it, I'm going to have each wall of it insulated so I can have a heater per tank and that will keep them warm throughout the winter. For the summer months, I was thinking of having a side or two that I can remove easily so I can just take one off to let air circulate through it. I haven't sat down and drawn out too much for it yet, but I was thinking of installing a small fan or two near the top of the enclosure that will either bring air in/out or just have two vents cut out on either side. Any suggestions are always great as well!

Fish tanks in a basement in VA? One word "Dehumidifier"

Any wood will do if painted with a sealing paint. Kilz is available at home depot or Ace hardware and is a top choice for moister barrier and mildew control.

If you want to be safer then pressure treated lumber is the next step but it adds to the cost quite a bit. Metal stands painted with a waterproofing paint or even good old rustolem would work as well.

He said garage not basement.

Yeah, I do have tanks in my basement, but we usually have to put out a humidifier in winter time, so maybe not this year! But yes this will go in the garage..I have a tank out there now, my 55gallon, which has 1/2" insulation on all 4 sides and the bottom, the tank is around 79º and the fish are doing great..Did I mention we had snow flakes falling today?
