shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
now that ive learned you dont really need carbon in your tank, and therefore dont really need to keep buying new inserts for the penguin 350, i had an idea to modify it so that you dont need to buy inserts and still have adequate mechanical filtration and id like to know what some people think before i go through with it. i was thinking of removing all the material off the the insert and just keeping the plastic, inserting the plastic into the filter as close to the biowheel as possible, then stuffing the space on the other side with scrubbies. they will filter out all dirt and i would not have waste $50 on this filter. do you think this idea will work?

Instead of the scrubbies you should just buy an xp filter pad and cut it to size. That way it will properly clean the tank and you can rinse it then use it again without it falling apart. That way you save money and imo it would clean your tank better than the regular ones.

Dude just buy the super cartridge sc5, there like 4bucks for 1 and all you need to do is cut a piece of what ever media you want to use and place it inside the sc5.

i didnt feel like buying more cartridges for mine so i just filled them with scrubbies for the hell of it. but these HOBs arent my main filtration i use a big sump and a canister as well

Ac70 sponges(2 per side) Fit near perfectly in the penguin 350. Very easy to rinse out once a week.

FYI, Scrubbies are typically used for biological fintration, not mechanical. For cheap filtration, go on Ebay and buy a huge roll of filter media either white/blue or white/pink. It cost me around $14 and I gave away a bunch and still have plenty to share.
