Hello, I am new to MFK so please excuse me if my thread is in the inappropriate section. (Or the moderators can move it)

I will be purchasing a couple of 3-4'' polypterus senegals in a day or so for my 55 Gal and I also have a 30 Gal breeder tank set up for feeders I plan on raising.

My question is, which feeder fish (convict, guppy, etc) is the most "ideal" feeder?

Ideal in this case meaning easiest to raise, fast breeding time, high nutritional value, largest feeder output, and such things of that nature.

Your feedback is much appreciated.

Cons are faster./. THough do you have a spare 30 to raise them in too??

:iagree: Cons are quick and easy, but you will need a grow out tank seperate from the parents. Also a small fry tank may be helpful to. With frequent water large changes I can get my fry to 1/2 inch in 2 months and 3/4 to 1 inch in 4 months I am using a total of 5 tanks for my breeder progam.

It takes awhile for the fry to hit the 1" range. Convicts Breed very fast but imho are slow growing, also most of my fish wont eat conivcts due to what I think is there body shape and fins. Guppies on the other hand ( I cant keep guppies they always die ) Are soft and all of my fish love them.

If you have a tank for the parents to breed, and a tank for the fry to grow, and you want Alot of feeders than go with cons but like I said I think they grow way to slow to be feeders.

milkman what were u feeding ur cons for them to grow slowly on u.
i power feed my frys with bbs for the 1st 2 weeks then live brine shrimp after.
they grow very fast coz theyre very greedy eaters. i change water often too tho.

zinq, ill go with conz coz theyre very tough fish. (well tougher than guppies)
ime, my baby guppies tends to get sick more like ich etc. etc than my baby conz.

Hmm....So cons are winning at the moment.

I'm probably going to end up with guppies anyways since my dad wants them as feeders and I'll probably get a grow out tank too.

But anyways, what kind environment do you usually provide for optimal growth of the fry? I mean:
What kinda food do you provide? How often? (btw whats bbs?)
Sponge filtration?
Barebottom/Sand/Gravel?
Hiding places?

On another note, are ghost shrimp easy to breed and feed to senegals?

Cons will produce a big clutch for you, but I find Mollies to grow quicker than Con fry.
