Hello IAH,

What is the ideal flow-rate for a Canister Filter for a 180Gal (FW) tank?

The tank is for Silver Arowana and a couple of (Florida) Gars. (I might add some more fish over time.)

I did search a little bit on this forum, but I didn't find this information.

I am based in Bombay, India and the brands commonly available elsewhere are a bit expensive here as compared to the local brands.

Hence, I would really appreciate if you give me the required specifications (bare minimum required and ideal) rather than model-names of specific brands.

(I am under the impression that the "turnover" rate should be at least around 3. While I am able to find submersible filters of Flow-rates over 1400L/Hr, the sites (which deliver to Bombay for reasonable costs) don't seem to have Canister filters which have comparable flow-rates. Which leads me to believe that maybe Canister filters don't need to have flow-rates yielding to a turnover rate of 3.)

Please advise.

Thank you,
Sid

More of a bump than anything else, but I think that when tanks get that big most go with either multiple filters, what they add up too I don't remember, or a sump system. hope someone else can be more helpful

hmmm i understand your pain dude...what is common abroad is just way too expensive out here [Eheim, Fluval etc etc].

Anyways for my 150G tank with a Banjar Red Arowana, a florida gar, polyps and clowns i use 2 Dolphin external filters one at 1600LPH and the other at 1000LPH and an internal filter rated at 2000LPH.

Arrived at this setup after much trials and errors and is working great with twice-a-week water changes :)

post a few pics of your tank dude :)

I like turnover rate of ten. At least 1 or 2 is sufficient for biological, but mecanicaly clear water needs more. Why don't you order 2 Aquaclear 110, they are made in Italia, that is not so far away from India ? Turnover of 500 gal/hour each.
