I know there are a lot of factors that come into play with this question so please I am looking for generalities in this answer. I have a 150 rift lake tank. I am curious as to the ideal stocking number of fish. Let’s assume that the fish are a variety of peacocks, Haps and a few mbunas that max in size from 7 to 14 inches.
I have a number in mind but would like to see where everyone else is.

What are the dimensions of the tank? How many of the fish are over 7 inches? What species of mbuna? Is it all male or mixed gender?

Species is important. Some won’t mind high stocking, while others (cough Auratus, red zebra. Etc. cough) will go full dovii on you until they find a number they like.

Standard 6 foot 150 tank. Mostly males but I know a few females have snuck in. The mbuna are yellow lab mutts and one OB zebra. The OB is a little aggressive with the other mbuna. Currently I do not believe any fish is over 7 inches. The OB, red empress, tangerine tiger and comp are all similar size at around 5-6 inches. Here is the tank about a month ago. A few fish have been removed since then.

As I said I am just looking for roughly how many medium to large is optimal when fully grown. I am thinking 15.

15 to 20 based on amount of hiding spots and your water change routine.

I like 18 if no females and all the fish mature at 6 inches or less. Scale back for larger fish.
