pH is not an issue. Keep your pH consistent and focus on your KH. You do realize these catfish grow far too large? The RTC are best kept in a pond rather than a tank IMO unless you can geta gigantic tank for it. Why not try other alternatives?
I respectively disagree. I think a low ph is the #1 cause of gill curl on young rtc's. I have not scientifically proven this but I have never had gill curl on a neutral or up tank. But I see it often on low ph set-ups and older tank set ups that inherently have low ph levels.
I like to keep tanks buffered to keep the filtration running and have system at 7.4 pH that I'd like to keep an 18" craig's list rescue in. It will be my new cull eater for ugly, deformed fancies and since I have lots of large feeders it can have some of those to.
I know they are amazonian fish but so are angelfish and I know people that breed them at 7.8 pH.
I guess what I'm asking is not what is the published rage but rather what is the highest you have successfully maintained one of these great fish.
