Hi,

Could anyone be so kind and enlighten me on the ideal ph range for a venezuelan pike? I have scoured the web and havn't really found what I was looking for. The guy at the LFS said they would be fine in my tank with my 7.8 ph level.... I have ph adjusters, but my tap water is consistent around the 7.8 ph level and all current fish do well. Filtration is optimal and I perform weekly water changes..... but basically I just want to see if my ven pike will do well under those conditions? Thanks for any help!

As with most SA fish, they live naturally in a fairly acidic pH (6.5-7). If you want to make their environemtn more natural, you can consider adding blackwater extract, or a cheaper alternative of adding driftwood or boiled oak leaves. However, they will probably be fine and thrive in whatever pH you place them in (as long as any pH change occurring is gradual), excluding extremes.

I've heard 6.5-7.5 is the ideal range. Hope this helps:)

Mine have done well in anything between 5 and 7.5.

7.8 should not be a problem for you, but if you want to try to bring it down, you could try the above mentioned methods (I have a LOT of driftwood in a couple of my tanks, hence the low pH...)

thanks all, very helpful (and assuring) info. I actually just put some driftwood over the weekend with out knowing it helps lower PH? I was just looking to add additional hiding spots... but from your replies it helps with PH too?

Pike is doing really well (love this fish) he eats like a pig and I have sucessfully got him to accept pellet foods... I also vary some market shrimp and other meaty foods... Would like to give him some live foods every now and then, any suggestions? I have a bunch of tree frogs that in my back yard would that be okay?

he/she is around 8 - 8 1/2 inches right now.
