Ideal Water Conditions for Black Arowanas

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A little acidic like 6, water temp around 78, soft water is preferred but not always available in some areas. I use an R/O but that is because of reef tank, although it is best water for tanks you can get. If using R/O do not forget to recondition water before using it. Not sure if you wanted all this info, but there it is

Hey that info is very helpful! I have an API tap water filter I use. I ask this question as I know some people keep their black aros in 7.5 - 8.0 PH and water temps of 85 degrees. My black aro has frayed fins, other than that she is fine, I'm just trying to get my head around the frayed fins when ammonia/nitrates are below 40. That's when some people tell me to keep her in high Ph and others are like oh hell no keep her in 6.5 7.0 ph!

If you look where they come from, amazon, water has a lower pH, from leaves, think of discus and angelfish. If your NH3 and NO3 are around 40, you might consider a water change and back off the feeding as I can only assume there is left over food in tank. What type of filter are you using. If you look at my pics I had a beautiful 10" black arowana about 1 year ago, I raised it for a pet store owner. It was eating Hikari food sticks (floating) exclusively. Are there any other fish in tank, I always try to keep a pleco and some sort of cleanup crew in my tanks. Some type of catfish or crayfish. To help keep the bottom clean, I have gravel in my tanks

I have an FX5 filter on a 55 gallon tank. I currently have a common pleco and 3 baby plecos, 2 yellow lab cichlids, and three small electric blue jack dempseys. I do a water change every sunday, but starting wednesday I do two (wednesdays & Sunday) I have both sand and gravel on the botton of my tanks, you can see my set up in my albums as well. (I moved the parrots out of the tank they are no longer in the 55 gallon) I noticed last night that my KH is really low. and I started to feed every other day instead of everyday. My aro eats hikari food sticks as well, she also eats nightcrawlers and minnows every two weeks.

What can you recommend to stabilize KH/PH levels? Concerning the ammonia/nitrates I'll do as many water changes and gravel vacuuming to control that, I just need to learn to secure kh/ph!

There are 2 products out there to help stabilize pH, one is (pH 5.0 Seachem Discus Buffer) directions on bottle to help adjust to correct pH of tank, the other I started using is Arowana Spa from Ocean Nutrition. I have to add supplements to my R/O water anyway so I try to get the best I can.

no it is almost clear, I am looking at bottle now, if you look at posts though you can see how to do your own blackwater extracts, sounds and looks great, and would be good for your setup as well, I looked at your pics, nice setup. All of your fish would benefit from it.

Black aros like quite still water...an FX5 is a huge filter on that size tank.

Meyjeffrey, thats for the comment about my tank! I saw your pics too and think your finned friends are awesome! I am going to place the order for the Arowana Spa from Ocean Nutrition and see what happens. I'll keep you posted! thanks so much for all of your help!

SimonL... my first thoughts on the FX5 on my tank with the aro were the same...but she loves the current in the tank a lot better than when I didn't have it. If anything all my fish seemed to react to it more positively.
