i am getting my 75 gallon tank next week for my upgrade. not sure what size tank can fit under a wrought iron stand for a 75, but i wanted to make my own sump/refugium. i have googled the s**t out "DIY sump/refugium" but have seen/read so much info i think i got myself more lost than anything. its a regular 75 gallon, no overflow built in or anything so i figure i would need to purchase an in tank overflow, i have a basic idea of how i should do this but not completely sure. i want to find a way without having to drill holes in my tank, and dont mind having to have pvc leading into the top of the tank as my return and feedback. just looking for the most simple and effective design for this and any feedback/ideas/links that wont confuse the crap out of me would be greatly appreciated.

well, There is a sticky about it on this forum, take a look at it...

I just made my first overflow today and it was not as hard as I thought it would be =)

I am currently saving for the money to make the sump though so I got an empty 20G ready for conversion =)

i plan on doing my own sump/refugium and just buying an overflow box for my tank. there is a forum on a DIY nitrate/nitrite filter where the guy has a "waterfall" made from PVC pipe that leads the water onto a screen with lights on both sides to promote algae growth on there instead of the tank. would this be good for ammonia removal and all? i was thinking of somehow incorporating that nitrate/nitrite filtration into my sump/refugium. would that DIY be sufficient as my only filtration with a pump feeding back into the tank if i did the screen and lighting properly? i was thinking if i was able to incorporate the DIY nitrate/nitrite filter, i would have that as the first section of my sump/refuge tank, , then get the second section to include my live rock, sand bed, pods etc, then have the third section with my heater. i have a HOB skimmer that i was debating leaving in the tank. thoughts and/or suggestions?

Is this tank salt or fresh?

The denitrator will only remove nitrates, but the ammonia is will eventually become nitrates. From what I have read, the denitrators are a great way to reduce the overall amount of nitrates, but in most cases will not completely eliminate the nitrates.

For the most part, the idea sounds plausible. A picture out how this will all be setup is always useful. You should MS paint something up for us.

its a salt water tank. right now i have a 29 gallon with 2 green spotted puffers, 2 F8 puffers, chocolate chip starfish, scooter blenny, and two small damsels. im picking up the tank next week and transferring them over once i have the tank cycled. currently since i was planning on upgrading i kept the HOB filters(aquaclear 70, up to 70 gallons and a marineland biowheel filter for up to 55 gallons) with a skimmer for up to 100 gallons. i wanted to make my sump/refuge for it out of a 20 long or something along those lines. my whole thing im getting confused on is the feed into the sump and the return out. should i have pumps both rated the same? and are ballasts needed? i would like to just basically make the 20 gallon sump/refuge another tank with some live rock algae and stuff in it without actually sectioning it off, that would be best, but will section it off if needed

You don't necessarily have to section it off, but it would be advisable to do so. You will only have one pump in the whole setup. The water that comes from the tank is transferred via an overflow. Using two pumps would cause your sump to overflow. Do a search for "DIY Overflow" or just look at the stickies in the DIY section, that should give you an idea.

so if i get an overflow that is rated at 300GPH how large pump should i get? this is the type of stuff i feel more lost on. the GPH that certain width PVC lets run through vs. the pump and what the rating on that should be in order to keep my water level consistant

the overflow box kit im getting has 1" bulkheads on it so im assuming 1" PVC will have to be run from it. i would have to use a consistant width of PVC throughout the whole filtration system right?

ok, well this is about the third time i have gotten nothing out of these people while they are answering other threads. all i asked is a simple question about the water feed back into the tank and everyone doesnt answer. i come here because i dont know the answer to something. like i said before in a post about feeding my scooter blenny. it seems like this site is very reliable, only for puffer info though. whatever... dont answer and let me kill my fish and flood my house. seriously dont bother answering im just going to take a guess at what pump i need, what size pvc i need to hook up from my overflow, and hope everything works out and the next day my tank isnt drained and fish arent dead.
