Gday peoples,

I am planning on making a 3teir breeding/growout setup and need some ideas for the overall setup and the filtration.

These are the tanks that I had in mind:

1 x 4ft - 120x35x50 (210L) 189L running @ 85-90% full
2 x 6ft - 180x35x50 (315L) 284L running @ 85-90% full

However I am contemplating on using a 5ft over the 6ft mentioned above, with a little more depth for an increased water volume (150x45x50) but this will depend on the budget.

Im sticking to the plan of using larger tanks and dividing them, rather then using a lot of smaller tanks.

My first thought was to plumb the multiple tanks together, although I realized there a risks in doing this. So I have opted to running a single canister filter per tank.

I am trying to plan this well, so i dont plan to fail and I need some ideas on breeding/growout setups.

Use sponge filters with air stones in the grow out tanks. HOB or canisters in the main breeding tank. Sponges are best for fry, wont kill them or swallow them up.

Depending on the sensitivity of the fry, an air driven sponge filter might be more appropriate because it doesn't create much current. You could also slip a sponge onto the intake of whaterver filter you're using to avoid sucking the fry up. I've bought sponges for this and I've cut into AquaClear sponges to fit them onto intakes as well. They do need frequent cleaning though to avoid flow restriction.
