Hey guys I have a 55 gallon I was considering adding a rhomb piranha to but may consider going towards an african biotope since my 75 is south american.

Filtration will be an aquaclear 110 and penguin bio wheel 350. Overstocking is not an issue since I'm religious with 2x a week water changes.

My thoughts were
Congo tetras
A smaller species syno catfish
Some sort of freshwater puffer that can handle tankmates?

And other ideas I'm open to

Thanks!

Puffers can easily rip tankmates apart. Don't put anything besides the same type of puffer and expect survival. Puffers, unless it's a species only tank, can and probably will go take chunks out of other fish. Also, the only real freshwater puffer I know of is the Pea Puffer. Most freshwater puffers are brackish. However, puffers are really cool fish that I wish I had. If you do decide to go with puffers, I would do either a single semi large one, or a lot of Pea Puffers. I think that sometime in the near future I'm actually going to make my 20 gallon into a tank for Pea Puffers as well. Anyways, good luck with the tank man

No idea on puffers, but I have a 55 with 8 congos, 1 synodontis nigervintis, and 4 buffalo head cichlids. I plan on a few more synos and maybe an oddball or 2, like ropefish or an African butterfly. It a nice relaxing tank and really active when I drop in a frozen bloodworm cube.

Well after looking at what species I would like to keep from africa. I couldn't come up with many that I like or that I would fit so have decided to switch to another SA tank or piranha tank only. Thank you all for your help. Mods please close

Africa has plenty of nice fish... If you have the cash then Tetraodon schoutedini is a compact and friendly species that most say is easy to care for. Combine it with some small synos, Pelvachromis cichlids and African plants and you have a winner. I take it you already set the tank up though?
