Just got a standard 20 gal today. Not going to set it up right away going to ponder my ideas for a while. One idea, is I might do a native tank since I ended up making my 75 gal into a amazon tank. If I do go native route any suggestions for this tank? I know I can easily do sticklebacks or minnows. Would it be too small for a pair of dollar sunfish? Planning on using sponge or hob filter, fennex LED lights, and substrate would be left over floramax and fine sand. Thanks

A pair would be a bit cramped but a pair of blue spotted sunfish would be more comfortable and there'd be room for some darters. Another fun group would be a trio of pygmy sunfish, dwarf killifish, a swamp darter and some bluefin killifish. Would definitely go with a HOB filter. A forest of vals and moss covered driftwood would look great and be pretty true to a US biotope.

I probably wouldn't do a dollar, a bantam would be a better fit.
1 bantam or banded sunfish
4 southern red bellied dace
6-10 darters
snails. you'll probably get them for free on your plants.
if you order them from zimmerman's you'd end up with something like -
2 sunnies
5-6 dace
8-13 darters
because he includes extras in case some don't make it, so you'd be forced to overstock through no fault of your own. when I ordered last time, two died and I still ended up two fish more than I ordered.

Pygmy sunfish usually need live or frozen foods, if you sont want to have to feed live or frozen foods Ive heard that Banded Sunfish can be trained to eat dried, pellets or flake instead. I personnally would go with several Rainbow darters, and some Golden or Banded topminnows if you want a colorfull active native tank....or some colorfull dace and shiners. You can look at Jonahs aquarium, Sachs aquaculture, Zimmermans fish or Bt darters for ideas online.
