Ideas for my GF's first new tank!!! :)

I need help everyone, these are the details:
She got a 20 gallon Tall with stand for free with Live plants included, not familiar with what types. She wants colorful fish but I don't want to add small tetras... I was thinking something small in the cichlid family that can possibly do well and won't grow much. I was thinking discus and maybe bright rams...... Is that a good idea? Any other suggestions? How many can she keep in the tank? Etc. thank you in advance everyone

WAY too small for discus - please do your homework. (They aren't even colorful.)

You could get away with one pair of convicts, or Kribs, but be prepared to find homes for the fry quickly. They aren't all the colorful either.

Keep in mind - FIRST, this is for HER, not for you - Take HER to the store, and ask her to choose what she likes. If she likes tetras, then so be it. You can get some beautifully colorful small barbs, tetras, or even some livebearers.
If you don't put HER first, she won't be your gf for long. Have her look up photos, or take her to the store and see what she likes.

Yeah she should pick! Some fish that beginners also love are mollies, platies, guppies, etc. German Blue Rams would be perfect for your 20 though!
 
Get her to check out different killi fish, or even things like celestial pearl danios, plenty of cool small fish for a 20G...

My gf started with a betta, most beginners will like bettas for their first fish, and a 20 is perfect for one. Especially in a planted the colors will pop. I would show her some of the different stuff people mentioned as well as bettas. Eventually I stuck my gf with babysitting this small fahaka I got from a lfs though, and she ended up not wanting to give it back lol. It ended up never growing and now she has a 50 gallon with a 3-4 in fahaka, and a couple cichlids
