im looking for around 0.4-0.7 any smaller and it gets sucked into the filter, any bigger and its basically gravel not sand. going to have a couple of rays so needs to be sand so as not to injure them. also will help with any plants i decide to put in the tank
cool a fellow 225 gallon ! I'm actually setting mine up now, should be ready on monday-Tuesday. as for stock, I'm going for Cichlids and other larger fish, kind of a semi aggressive community of mixed fish. I have to say after seeing some rays yesterday in the LFS I am somewhat tempted by them
also you could add some Bichirs? in that footprint you could have many different kinds! (also my tank is 5' long and 3' wide, not as long as yours)
pair of rays
12 red line torpedo barbs
3 red shoulder severums
4 pictus cats
and 6 red hook silver dollars
1 flag tail
small group(4-5) of geos
maybe a couple larger ca/sa cichlids
basically a pair of rays with plenty of dithers above gonna have a caved area of built up flat rocks pyramiding in the back left corner front to back and top to bottom a few pieces of bogwood in the rest of the open area leaving as much open swimming area for the rays as poss. the filtration is about 5x turnover p/h using 2 canisters 1 300watt and 1 500watt heaters 4 54w t8 tubes for lighting and blue L.E.D lighting to supplement the white tubes. def going with a black background now cause i do not have the patience to make my own 3d background or the money to buy one. just not totally sure of substrate thinking black silica sand but also could go for pool filter sand would all black be too dark or just enhance the colours of the fish under the white light. also want to find a way of puttin some plants in there aswell but i know the rays will uproot all plants on their level so was thinking of building a raised platform from rocks and fill it with sand and plant the plants in there? would this work?
anything i should be doing different??????? the tank will not be up and running til around mid dec due to work being done in the room(new carpet, fireplace, decorating)
