I live in the far north and we do not have a fish store. I am going to the city soon and would like to bring home some new fish for my tank. I only go once a year so I wanna make a good choice! I currently have a 55 gallon long with a 3" ebjd, 2 juvie firemouths around 2" a boliviam ram and a 4" asian upside down catfish. I'm looking for something with color and to reach the same size as my ebjd and firemouths that is agressive but not going to grow super fast and kill everything. I like parrots, would that be a plausable choice? Any other ideas? Thanks!
p.s. only interested in cichlids

Sorry ebjdgirl, but your tank is full. I'd like to know your tank measurements and filtration, but I have to believe when those fish grow up you will have a fully stocked tank. You might want to look at those apistos or other dwarf cichlids or maybe a few tetras, but really I wouldn't put anything else in the tank if I were you.

I agree that when they get larger the tank will be overstocked, however i plan on rehoming the bolivian ram in my less agressive tropical tank and removing the catfish as well as the fish get bigger.(lfs sold to me as upsidedown catfish, its actually the "giant species" which will be way too big :() I have 3 filters that hang on the back rated minimum of 40 gallon each and do weekly 40% water changes. Do you still think the tank will be over stocked with the two firemouths, 1 ebjd and maybe 1 more fish? Thanks so much for your feedback!

I don't think you will be overstocked with 1 ebjd and 2 firemouth's, and I think you could add some small schooling fish that would look nice, but I don't think you will really have any room for another cichlid unless its some sort of dwarf species. Now if you plan on upgrading in the future you options open up a little more. If you do end up planing on upgrading, I suggest you get a severum, one of the best cichlids IMO.

Oh how I would love to upgrade:drool: lol I don't think there is such thing as a big enough tank! Unfortunately where I live right now has no room for anything larger. If I move I will definately look into upgrading and severums though! If i were to add apistos or dwarf species do you think they would get bullied later? Thanks for your feedback. I've learnt so much from the people on this site:)

mm I don't think you're overstocked... you could get away with a small colorful apisto or female salvini if you have good filtration.

I would say your not overstocked with only three fish and 2 of them will only grow like 4 inches!! You could probably add something like a green terror if you have lots of hiding for the firemouths.

I'm sorry angryc, but I do not recommend putting a green terror with an ebjd. Please do not do this, especially in a 55. That is just a good way to end up with dead fish. No, not if you do that many frequent water changes and have that good filtration you are not currently overstocked. Thanks for the additional information. Here are a few suggestions:

1. Texas Cichlid (Will get a bit big, but may work)
2. Kribensis (Yes, it is African but it has been known by American cichlid lovers to often fit right in)
3. Apistos/ Dward cichlids as I mentioned earlier
4. Normal or Gold Jack Dempsey
5. My personal favorite of these options, a Blue Acara (looks like a green terror, but fits perfectly in with your fish and stays a good size)

Good luck!

You don't think a GT is a good idea but recommend a cyanoguttatus? That really makes no sense to me.

Personally, I would keep it at 3 cichlids in the 55, unless you plan on adding something that stays below 6". C. sajica would be a good choice if you can get your hands on one.
