As this is my husband's department-I'm more for the maintenance and mechanics of the hobby. After contacting two trustworthy LFS for their opinions, going to call Marineland and get their input on my problems, going to have someone actually come and look at my tank...we need to construct a FAST indoor pond. We are still in the making of the indoor build for the catfish (insulating the garage), but now being under extreme pressure (read previous post) we don't have time to wait. Our garage leaks water and freezes as we live in the western PA. No basement, we live in a townhouse (rent), but there's a drain in the garage (bonus). Laundry room too small. We have a shed, but no electric in it. Now, we need to tear down the 265 to "rebuild" it, literally. So, we need room in the garage to work on it. This will be another thread, with pics of course as we'll need help. We're going to dissemble it from where it sits-the dining room as it's so dang heavy. Now, the indoor pond make. We were already preparing the garage-cleaning it out, planning on the insulation as we are compromising on the pond. We had time we thought, until May to finish this. Not now.

Options:
!) Move the breakfast nook (not main kitchen table) out of dining room and put 120 gallon pond tub there (largest my lfs carries on hand, cheap), we were thinking of the filtration plumbing building a sump and fx5. I cannot remember dimensions but it is shallow, but is wider than the 265 and maybe 5 feet long. Again, I can't remember the dimensions. I told hubby it would be enough to support both 2 foot catfish as they could turn around and swim as long as we put mega filtration on the tub...but to the extreme, that's cruel.

2) Same as above with the 120 gallon pond tub in dining room, rearrange living room-move 125g which we have to do anyways for something else, put a 2nd 100g pond tub in living room. Essentially separate the catfish. This would be more ideal than above.

3) Build a wooden frame in the garage where it does not leak water, although it is freezing in there since we haven't insulated the entire thing; use pond liner/swimming pool liner (this is where my hubby comes in) He would build the pond, quickly I would assume. Would need to use heaters, which we don't use in any of the tanks. I haven't for years...last time I used them, maybe 5 years ago, brand new, I tried them again after bad experiences, they never shut off and fried my fish. All of my tanks have been room temp-smallest of 5 gallons is still warm with tetras and no problems.

4) Use our pop up 8' by 30" swimming pool, coat it well with extra paint on liner (or whatever), but we have the heater problem...

5) He wants to get some acrylic or glass panes and build a tank as well as the stand in the garage. However, we're back to the original issue of rebuilding the 265 as we don't have the time nor the weather nor the space right now to build a huge tank. It's too humid where we live for the silicone, right?

Mainly in the garage, it's the heater problem. I'm not keen on space heaters. Afraid of them catching on fire or crazily running up the electric bill just to warm up the water.

Again, this is more for an emergency issue to rehouse my cats as my 265 is breaking down and I don't trust it. We rent-I'm sure those renters out there understand this one. I am not giving up my cats, and we discussed it and finally reached a common decision that we're not getting rid of the tank. We knew we needed an indoor pond, we were getting ready to accomodate for it although it's our loss since we rent, but we've been here already for so long, but this is an emergency as the one seam is breaking down.

Any opinions for a quick, but awesome and sturdy indoor (cheap) pond (considering we're fixing the 265 at same time)?

You're trying to temporally house the catfish, but not in the garage due to the leaking and heating issue? If I got that right...

Would the 8'x30" pool fit in the living room, or anywhere in the house for that matter? I would just line the pool with a tarp or two (on the inside) and cover the whole thing up to prevent splashing. Having not ever been a catfish owner, If they have spikes you may want to rethink this... or use more tarps. Hope this helps.

I wanted to use the 8' x 30" pool anyways (although hubbys didn't) and use extra pool liner (kind you can paint on or whatever) for them and set it up in the garage, AFTER we were done insulating the garage and rigging up the leaks from the ceiling in there. The leaks are from the top walk-out deck. The design here isn't very well. But, I did check into swimming pool heaters over the summer. I know they're expensive ranging from $800-$2000 and this swimming pool is 500 gallons so I might get away with just using regular aquarium heaters. However, the problem poses with the catfish eating them!!

There's nowhere else to set up that size pool in our place-it's a townhouse. The 265 gallon was meant for the one catfish alone as he's been fullgrown and that's the reason why I got the tank years ago; the other catfish was just meant to stay/grow in there while we were building his tank in the garage. We now have to rehouse both while we tear down and fix the 265g and we need good weather to reseal the tank as humidity here sucks for days at a time. That may take months.

Look into rubbermaid stock tanks. They make great temporary homes. Can always resell them later.

Where can I find ones big enough? I tried looking online as that's what I was thinking I found online years ago, a 300 gallon sized one for under $200, but couldn't find it again. That's why I was looking at the indoor ponds. My one LFS has it as a big rectangular box looking thing. Can either buy it like that or predrilled on one side. I'm guessing that's what you're talking about and my lfs is selling as "ponds". They have typical ponds as well. Honestly, I'd keep it as I kept all my "temporary" tanks. Always needed for something later on.

We would be willing to set up the (quick) indoor pond in the garage - I told hubby we can somehow build something, a canopy or something over the area where the garage leaks needs be if it goes on that side as I'd want the tank closest to the drain.

1) the heater issue - how to keep the catfish from eating the heaters, and that will raise the electric bill probably another $100-$150 I imagine as the heaters would be running nonstop. Like I said earlier, I have heaters, somewhere, I just don't use them.

2) If we are to put the catfish in the garage, is there someway to insulate the tank itself? Blankets, styrofoam, etc?

3) Hubby doesn't want the tank in the garage, but I'd prefer for it to be in there, IF I can figure this out...he doesn't want to keep fish if we aren't going to see them. But, we need all the room we can get to tear the 265g apart and carry it glass panel by panel into the garage to work on, then back and forth from there while rebuilding the stand, I guess.

Although this is going to be a temporary home, it will take us months probably to fix the 265 - need to reseal the entire tank pane by pane; top frame needs resealed as it leaks; top braces need fixed as they're weakening from overuse of strong lights and they were heavy (I didn't think about it); sump needs upgraded, and the stand needs rebuilt. So, it will be months to finish it as I thought we had until summer to finish the garage, then start on the tank. We *can* just work around the catfish in the garage while finishing up insulating the garage...I dread catching those fish.

Rubbermaid stock tanks are available at Tractor Supply Stores, Ace Hardware Stores, Sears, etc. Do a google search. They come in 70, 100, 150 and 300 gallon sizes.

If you put some kind of temporary isolation in your garage and cover the pond really well it shouldn't cost too much to heat it to room temp I'd say ;)
