My little hatchling is putting on some serious bulk and in a effort to stay ahead of the rampaging monster I'm looking at some options for a new tank( in the future). I Like the DIY plywood tanks, but due to the turtles weight and strength ( claws in particular ) I'd be worried about him damaging the waterproof coating and causing a leak. A stock tank would hold up well, but viewing and limited sizes seem to be a con. Reg. Aqaurium are extemely expensive for the size id need. Anyone have any other idea?

Thanks

I think if you do a plywood aquarium and line it with fiberglass and epoxy, that should be strong enough to withstand any scratching from the claws (especially if you put substrate in the bottom).

Probably cinder block and rebar would be your easiest and cheapest way to go.... Remember you have to seal the tank so that is where most of your cost will probably be.

Just search through the DIY and indoor pond sections. There's also some great build threads on koiphen.com.

Mine went from a 20 long, to a 40 breeder, to a 100 gallon rubbermaid, to a 300 gallon rubbermaid. I went the cheapest route possible, although I'm going to have to build something that's more apt friendly in the next year as I'm going to have to move back out. I'm thinking about building a tank that would fit under my bed and to make a loft bed. I think I'll be the only one to build a loft bed for a turtle, might be a major turnoff, or quite the opposite. Only time will tell, but I don't care.
