So I was talking with a friend at Church last week and she found out I was into keeping fish and she asked if I wanted another aquarium. I asked her what size and she proceeded to stretch out her arms about as far as she could. I checked it out yesterday and it is a 55 gallon. She said it has been sitting empty in their living room for about a year and if I wanted it they would be happy to give it to me and get rid of it. I gladly accepted. So I have just inherited another nice tank. It needs some cleaning but otherwise it is in great shape. If I don't have to put one of my naughty red devils in it, what would be a good way to go. Here are a few fish or thoughts I would like to do.

Flowerhorn
Cuban
Green Terror
Jack Dempsey
Couple local freshwater gar

I have owned a 75 gallon back in the day when I was a fish keeping newb and overstocked it, but have never owned a 55. I have seen 55's on youtube with a few good sized fish in them. For example one I saw had an oscar, a texas, and a jag. What can a 55 really handle? What would be a good set up? At this point I am thinking a solitary Flowerhorn, or a dempsey and some silver dollars. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

I would get a FH personally just because they are one of my favorite. Or a green terror, he would fit good in their but it's up to you, what you like best. There are a lot of options for a 55 gallon.

Scratch off a flowerhorn unless you plan on getting a short body. A 75g would be the minimum for a flowerhorn.
I believe a cuban would do fine, i think they are sweet fish and would be a cool wet pet. also a green terror would work by itself. i don't think i do silver dollars, they get pretty large and you need a school of them.

i'd say flowerhorn is out of the question... and i think a cuban may be too, i believe they get 12+ inches

I have been doing some looking on other forums and it seems a lot of people are against putting some of the bigger 12" cichlids in 55's. I am guessing most of that is based on them reaching their full growth. I would agree that a 75 would be best for those guys. If I were to use the 55 as a grow out tank, then find a 75 or better for it down the road, what time frame do you think I would have on the growth rate of a flowerhorn if I dropped one in the 55 at 2" or so?

What would be other options of a single or community CA/SA that could live permanently in a 55? My thoughts go to more of the Jack Dempsey, GT, Severum, Firemouth route.

Ide do severums or like one EBJD and some blue or gold rams or something. If You wanted something aggressive ide get a grammode and a few male black convicts

The answer is clear:
Breed black skirts until there are 500+ in your little 55 gallon tank.
Then throw in a chicken wing and watch.
hahahaha.

On a serious note, you should check out some true bony fish,
I think you'll fall in love half way through.

ebjd would destroy the rams... and a grammode + a FEW MALE CONVICTS would cause agression problems... :screwy:

you could do one single ebjd or one single grammode, but no other tanks mates
