Ideas? Heater guard or not to heater guard

I just had some eheim 300W heaters arrive the other day to replace my failing Stealth Pro's...needless to say I was shocked by their size 19":nilly:
That will teach me to wear glasses when reading product descriptions.

Needless to say I'm going to have to place these horizontal . I noticed that Eheim only recommended placing their suction cup holder up need the control unit which is only a 2-3" area leaving almost 16" of heater tube dangling so to speak..

To get to the point what are you using for heater guards ? Pics would be appreciated.

I'm worried about my acrylic and rubbermaid sumps / with the heater tip resting on the bottom?

Would a small piece of glass placed under the heater diffuse the heat?:popcorn:
 
the hagen tronic heater guards are nice but i think the longer, larger sizes are discontinued now. not sure. anyone know where i can order one? heater in or out of the tank...i think its one of those things that are good to have on a glass heater...just in case. a little preventative. why not.
