Ideas on DIY chiller

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A very small apt or bar fridge...some plumbing fittings and a coil of hose. Adjust the length of the internal hose to set the temperiture. Less hose in the fridge...warmer....more hose in the fridge...colder. Probubly have enough space left over for a six pack of universal lubricant.....

:iagree:
The length is one way to control the time the water spends in the fridge. I would recomend using a valve in addtion to the coil to control how fast the water passes through. The slower the flow the colder it gets. This will be easier to adjust also.

this would also cost quite a bit with the fridge running almost 24/7 this idea is usually the first DIY chiller idea thought of then thrown out because of the high electric bils it will cause

another idea that people have thought of is to do the same thing but if u live in a cooler climate area u run the hose/pipe in the lawn to cool it all this idea needs is a good power head which the fridge idea would need too!

so the latter DIY chiller is probably the most cost effective

A Mate of mine ripped out the cooling plate compressor ect from an old fridge and slapped the cooling plate on his CPU, before overclocking it to the max... Worked well. You could do that and drop the plate into the sump or even the main tank. Even better you could put a tropical tank next to it and use the radiator to heat it! One tank heated one cooled...sweet!

How many gallons are you trying to cool?

umm sumthing very easy is to get a large bottle and fill with ice then erun some arlin tubing through all this so theres 6 foot of airline tubing, then attach a pump and run

i am liking that! its easy and very very cheap which is usually the point in DIY!

I don't believe you should run a refrigerator upside down if that was your plan. (so the open end is up.) A compressor forces freon through a small line and then it expands very fast through a special valve. I think you would be looking for trouble of it freezing the freon lines. I am not a HVAC guy, but I would check it out first.

If you were able to make it work you can purchase a digital thermostat to controll the fridge. They sell them for home made kegerators. You could also convert a small deep freezer that opens from the top with that thermostat.

Check out a Hydroponic website, they use DIY chillers all the time. usually just the frion tubes in a bucket of water with a power head pumping it back to the tank.
