I currently have a 125g (72" x !8") with the below stocking.
- 1 x 4" Hypselecara temporalis (chocolate cichlid) male.
- 1 x 4" Heros severus (gold severum) male.
- 1 x 2 1/2" Herichthys cyanoguttatus (Texas cichlid) unsexed.
- 2 x 3 - 3 1/2" Thorichthys meeki (breeding pair of firemouths.)
- 2 x 3" Vieja synspillum (body shape variance leads me to believe they ma be a M/F pair)
- 1 x 3" Hypsophrys nicaraguensis - male.
Of course I realize this stocking will not be a long term situation in a 125g. I got them all at 1 -2" about 5-6 months ago and have not had any real aggression issues beyond chasing and a minor nip here and there. I had thought to leave the 125g as a CA tank and rehome the SA's. With aggression now on the rise, the nic and Tx have some sort of grudge where they lip lock some and battle pretty regularly, the nic chases the syn's, the FM's chase everything but the Severum, etc, I can see the time for thinning this tank is imminent.
I have a 29g that is now cycled and ready to go. I bought a 50g that will be set up by tonight and started on the cycling process. And, of course, the above mentioned 125g. I hope to scrape up the $$ for a 180g my LFS has on sale, then DIY a stand, and cherry pick some filters, lights, heaters I have laying around to get it going. But the 180 is not something I want to figure into the stocking right now. So with the 3 tanks, here's my plan:
125g - 2 synspillum, 1 Nicaraguensis, 1 Texas.
50g - gets the SA's - 1 chocolate, 1 severum.
29g - the breeding pair of firemouths.
If and when the 180g becomes reality, I would move the chocolate and severum. I would also make some additions like psittacus, uaru, and a possible mate for the chocolate. The FM's would get the 50g and the 29 would maybe become a planted tank and/or apisto's. Sound like a doable interim plan? Outside of the chocolate and the syns, I am not so attached that I would not return to LFS.
