I don't know if RO/DI units already do these things or not but I had a couple questions/ideas. Unfortunately any system like this is a long way down the road.
In advance, some of these ideas would only be beneficial to people with a lot of tanks, others may save eveyone a little money/water.
1. Would prefiltering the water going to the RO unit either a) reduce waste water or b) reduce the number of replacement membranes needed? (or would it end up making the unit waste more water)
2. For people who use RO and the waste water is a concern would putting a pump before the filter to increase water pressure be of any benefit? Anything from the units to increase water pressure to a shower to a pressure washer.
3. A method of recycling the water in a way to
a) Feed the water back to the RO unit
b) Feed the water to a storage tank (either for drinking, with an extra filter, watering plants, etc.). I have read about this being done before but never seen someone write up about their system.
c) Using the water for tanks that don't need quite as pure of water.
4. (Not related to RO) Other ideas to save water
a) Does anyone here reuse tank water for other purposes such as watering plants? If so, do you just send it directly to the plants or store it in a holding tank?
b) Save water used by products such as the python gravel cleaner for above uses
c) Use old tank water + a small water pump to power the python. I don't know the pressure requirements for this though
