I have four 34.5 x 34.5 x .5 sheets of safety glass, looking for recommendations for building a plywood tank.

Maybe I should do four tanks? What dimensions?

I'm going to refrain from comment on the use of tempered glass in aquaria other than to say I strongly encourage you research that part yourself. There is a lot of info out there, some of in contradictory. Remember, you don't necessarily need to fill a tank all the way for it to be enjoyable. And not using free glass would be tough.

So that aside, I would have two main questions if I were you. 1) Do I want a plywood tank with viewing on one, two, or three sides? And 2) What species do I want to keep and therefore do I need a larger tank or am I better off with two smaller tanks. I guess the third question would be how much space do I have?

My first thought was an eight foot long tank with two front viewing panels, with approximately 9" framing in between. You could probably go as short as 80" and still have room for sufficient room for framing in between.

You could also add side windows on one or both ends. Since you're using tempered glass I would not recommend you but the glass up together like you see on some builds here on this site. Don't get me wrong, I love that look, but with tempered glass you really want to take care to protect the edges. I'd rather see the panels of glass completely encased along their edges in framing and silicone.

Does that help with your thought process?

Disregard my suggesting measurements for framing, etc. I'm recovering from some nasty virus and not functioning all that well.

Obviously the inside of the tank could be as short as 69" so the tank wouldn't need to be 80" long. And if it were 96" long you'd need wider framing to allow for overlap when setting the window.

Hope that still gives your some food for thought.
