Let's play the terrible cichlid photo identification. Got this male a little while ago and he's in a terrible tank for photography. Should be pretty easy.

NOT a male! That is with out a doubt a female filter. You can tell by how porous and round it is. Also the small base. The males have much larger bases and have squarer bodies. I'd need to see a complete picture of the filter to tell you exactly which species it is; I can say with some degree of certainty that it is of the Plasticus Spongi family.

LOL... I agree..

i disagree i firmly believe that is a rare Filtoserus Spongerias, owner beware, it has been known to attack weak or ill fish..with the correct care, this beautiful creature can live as long as 5 years, there are even some accounts of a longevity of 15 years in various sub species.

No fair, Joey cheated! He went to fishbase.org and looked it up :-/
Modest Man, is it a really bad picture of a Green Terror?

Haha. I've actually been trying to get decent shots (nothing I take is "good") and I can't get crap of this guy. But if I posted a decent one it wouldn't be a challenge.

It's not an Aequidens or a Parachromis.

Going from this photo it appeas I have male and female sponges in the tank...

I respectfully disagree with your disagreement. I have a Plasticus Spongi peacefully sharing a tank with 100+ convict fry and it has not eaten one. They are very docile filter feeders that even share their food with the tiny 3 week old fry. Now, the male in the second picture may be the deadly prediator Filtoserus Spongerias you mentioned. But I'm not certian, but it does look mean. The picture is deceptive because it appears the female filter has cornered the floating tank decoration with fins, but that is merely an illusion.
