I have had 4 Red Belly Pacu for about a month now and just out of curiosity, would like to know their sexes.

I believe its 3 Females and a Male, because the females are larger and have less Red on their stomachs.... It was difficult taking a decent picture, and I still couldnt after 40+ tries. They move too fast!

65643383 I the one which I believe to be a male is top-right.

What did I get myself into?

just kidding.

To answer some expected questions, they are currently in 20g-long growout. When they get around 3"+ I will move them to my 55

With a ~10" Tinfoil and a ~3" Bala

When they get to ~5"+ they will be eaten.

:grinno:

They will be moved to a special project I have been working on since the day I bought them.

sorry for the double post. Tried to edit. Don't understand why its dissabled.

You can't edit after 30 mins or something, but it never lets me edit lol

Please be aware that pacu get 36" plus. A tank to house 4 would be massive.

Other then the "massive fish" spew :P There is some stuff on sexing pacus at http://www.postring.net/pacuforum/index.php - the particular message is http://www.postring.net/pacuforum/index.php?showtopic=20

Good luck with your fish :) I have 3, they are fun, but hard to keep at times :D

you cant sex pacu until there mature.pacu do get vary large.4 of them will need a vary large tank probably more than what you can provide.3 feet long is pushing the size of a pacu in captivity tho.mine is a about 2 years old and 20in. you could keep 1 pacu in a 3 foot wide and 6 feet long tank.55 gal will not work.bring all but 1 or 2 back if you cant get 300+ gallon tank for them.

I am well aware of the sizes they can obtain. I've had many in the past.

Thank you for your help.

I'm using the fiberglass shell of a broken 8 person hot tub (when I say broken, I mean the jet motor burnt out and the entire hot tub is being replaced.) 750+ gallon.
3ftx3ft sheet of 1" glass for the viewing. Its being moved to the basement with an overbuilt stand. I think they will enjoy it more than the last couple enjoyed the 80g :screwy:

My experience with the previous Pacu's was that they grew to adapt to the tank. Stunted around 12" which was okay for their surroundings. Not okay in my book.

What I enjoy about Pacu's are their personalities. Very curious and playful. The Tinfoils, Bala, Tetra's, Gold Gourami's, and many other fish (in my experience) were calm and unattractive...

I'm not insecure, lol, however I like to push the limit in everything I do. The bigger, the better.

am I crazy for thinking this is the difference? because 3 of my fish are larger and shaped like the 'female' and the small skinny one, I tend to think is a male, which also has more red...

I know this is fact with other species of fish, dont understand why it wouldnt apply to Pacu.
