Hello, I recently purchased an umbee about 3 inches and not too colorful, just wondering what kind of umbee I have? ( heard there were a few different species)

Not nessicarily different species yet, more along the lines of different catch locations. Although maybe a species split in the future.

Yours being new, and on white gravel may be abit washed out. But I’d guess it’s of Rio Mag lineage. But without knowing where it came from there isn’t reall a great way to tell till it start to color up abit more. Keep an eye out for prominent freckles

Same fish in both pictures.

Thank you for the responses , I actually called the place I got it from and they said it was a rio mag umbee, and most likely a female ( but I think they guessed on that lol)

Yes I think they did guess. At 3 inch it's impossible to tell just by appearance. Hope you get what you want male or female.

Ya he did hesitate abit when asked lol, i don't mind male or female really to be honest. At what size would I be able to tell male or female?

If you have a group of juveniles they should start showing off to one another and showing male or female colourations at 5 inch.
A lone fish can take a lot lot longer to show it's true colours. I've have a 8 to 9 inch Umbee now that I'm struggling to sex. One day it looks male another day female.
These are 5 to 6 inch and can easily be sexed. They were grown up in a group of 6 juvenile's. The other 4 couldn't be sexed.

Thank you for the answers, in my case this umbee is in a 55 for now all alone so it's kind of hard to tell still...
