identify??

There are multiple of these "potato" looking bugs in my tank, noticed they come out at night and they have a hard shell ,and climb on the glass and the rocks. are they Good/Bad, and what do they do? Thanks!!!!




 
they loom like something we have over here in the uk called a chiton (Acanthochitona crinita). they live in the low tidal reaches of rocky shores down to 50m. they eat algae the species we have get to about 1.5" long.

as far as i've heard they are innert, nothing to fear
 
the LFS that i deal with all the time actually sells them, they are similar to snails but i think they do a better job on the algae lol. neat find though.

i new all those hours spent in rockpools in the summer, and british marine wildlife books would pay off. :)
