This may sound silly but I bought a bichir, that was labeled, dinosaur bichir. Is that the type it is or just a generic term? If it is how do I identify the type of bichir. I have a 125 gallon, heavily planted tank. I have rainbows, large Congo tetras, and large Dennison barbs. The bichir is about 2 inches long. Is this a good combination?

It's probably a just a Senegal bichir, go ahead and make sure you check out the polypterus section under ancient fish for good stickies on different info and identification.
2inches is rather small, might want to grow it out a little in a small tank to make sure it gets food

Probably just a senegal. If possible I would seperate it and put it in another smaller tank to grow out. Because in that large of a tank a 2" poly might have a very difficult time finding food which it would need separately to bulk up.

If the price was sub 20usd its almost guaranteed to be a Senegal.

+1 on doc's suggestion to grow him out a bit. In a 10g, feeding twice a day, he will grow to 6" in no time. Mine slowed down at that point. The present stock will eventually become food. Eventually being 1-2 years, depending on his individual growth rate. My oldest poly is a senegalus. He stopped growing at 11.5"

Thanks everyone for the helpful info. I will put him in smaller tank and try to get a picture. I paid $8 for him.

haha thats the PETCO special price. They only sell senegals. Enjoy him they tend to be really personable little guys, at least IME.
