Identifying driftwood

It’s a root ball. Much (most) of the interesting driftwood is.
No idea about species, but without clear pics of the grain, probably nobody can tell. I wouldn’t be able to say anyway.

I would guess after a quick Google search that its either a Black Forest Driftwood or Black Spider Driftwood.
 
It's likely darkened over time from being submerged in water for a while.
Reminds me of manzanita, but manzanita's harvested from the actual above-ground tree, IIRC.
Nice piece, though. Awfully twisty and whatnot; quite unique. Doesn't look like a softwood, so it should be fine in a tank.

If it’s flexible, it’s not Manazita. Maybe grape wood. Got some pieces because they were all twisty but the stuff goes soft fast
