I'm going to buy a Juvenile Green Texas Cichlid from my LFS. The ones they have are between 2-3 inches. I really want to get a male. Any advice on identifying a male? I usually just watch them for like 10 mins and look for the most aggressive one.

Its hard to identify them at that age and size. They texas would all come from the same batch at a lfs. Buy the biggest ones if you want males. Always worked for me.

Any characteristics like pointed fins that suggest male? Thanks guys I will do that.

Here are some young Herichthys carpintus, very close cousins to H cyanoguttatus.
The largest one in the pic is one of the males, beyond its size, note its slightly steeper profile and beginning of a nuchal hump, much more higher bodied than the more torpedo shaped females(lower left and behind the dominant male). Due to their close relationship, carpintus would have all the same characteristics you'd be looking for in cyanoguttatus.
I believe the one he is displaying to, is also a male, but don't remember for sure.
