So, who can tell me which species he is. I picked him up from Repair the other day. He's at least a foot long SL and in great shape.

I agree, I just saw a pic of that very fish, and under it said Crenicichla xingu var.
 
Your Pike is Cr. venezuela, we have a 14"+ male with a 13" marmorata female. Had a pair of venezuelan pikes before - 16" male & 15" female, she was over 5" tall!

Xingu I have pointed, skinny heads, - usually orange on their fins.

really now? maybe I should email the owner of the pic so i can tell him that.
