In the air and I ain't comin down!
I am curious.... if we were to go back to the way it was when I came around and was told "You can't ID any Cichla until it is 8'' would you still be satisfied? I am curious because there is an influx of ID my Cichla threads. If you don't know what your buying then why buy it? If you didn't get what you thought you bought. Arent you still going to keep the Cichla? Just a question. I have only been in the game a year so if you ask me what your Cichla is it is what they sold it to you as a Cichla.;) Im no expert and no one here is. Except a few I guess. But I have seen everyone on here call every Cichla everything under the sun includung myself when ID'ing any small cichla. My suggestion is buy from a reputable dealer and leave out any of the doubt and guessing. JMO.. Any thoughts are on this theroy are appriciated. I also do understand that the price drives the want and need also but I am sure one of these great MFK vendors can get you what you need no problem. ( Rapps is always a good place to start)

i smell what you stepped in mike:D....i've been around cichla since i was young and fished for them out of the lake in hawaii! but never new that there were so many different types until i found this forum. But you right it, its pretty dumb to see people asking for id and being bummed or bothered when its not what they wanted to hear and its nobodys fault but your own! If you put enough time into this site you can, majority of the time anyway, tell if you buying what you want! and everyone knows that at that small of a size its hard to tell who from who and its just a choice your gonna have to make.

plain and simple if you put in the time reading all the id threads then you'll be tons more prepare in purchasing cichla from your lfs....and at time you can correct your lfs on what they have as well....So study my young cichla padawans!!!!

I wish I could see the fish I buy bu I can't and the place I get mine from calls monoculus temensis, and now I am ordering some ocellaris from them lol, I am having more fun ordering random cichla species, because they're supplier doesn't id them right, because I don't know what I will end up with, IMO having any cichla is great......

Yes inyoface makes a very good point research is key. I did so much resarch and still do. Some of us like you Dan don't have the luxury of seeing what were buying. But all said and done I am one who loves these Cichlids no matter what. But me being a noob to Cichla myself with just a year under my belt would just like to save some other new members the heart ach and say do your research and of course just love what ever cichla you get no matter what sp it is. Look at it this way you have one sp of cichla checked off the list if that's what your going for ~The total collection of all sp of cichla. If your looking for one sp in particular then if possiable BUY from a realiable seller. I would hate for these Cichla to go to home that doesnt want them just becuase the got the wrong sp. I walked past at least 40 Cichla but I only knew they were wrong for me because I did my homework.

Were talking about Cichlids that will exceed any of the normal home aquaria so getting rid of a 20''+ Cichla is not as easy as you think. Re homing it is nealry impossiable so just a warning make sure your buying what you want. Buying 10 Cichla Monolocus and ending up with Ocellaris and farmies at that sucks but it could have been avoided from the start. I just wonder where do all the unwanted monster end up? :( Just food for thought.

Well said High City, I must also say that the cichla I am ordering and currently have right now are very very likely farmies, (because anything wildcaught here would be much more expensive than what I am paying) . Being newer than you or most others here to cichla I am unsure if wild would be much harder to keep. I am finding that theses are quite easy to keep so far, not to say that I dont take care of them because I give the best care I can, but these seem to be a breeze, and IMO so what if they don't look as stunning as other cichla. For now I see these as a warmup or practice or whatever for when I am able to specialize in cichla in coming years and can obtain some awesome wild guys. I would rather keep less beautiful fish that I can keep very happy then a wild one, which is for now much more difficult in my situation. But yes I would definately still keep the cichla and if I ever have to get rid of some I will make sure that they go into good hands.

hmmmmmmmm... very interesting, MIKE...:D
and what thread did you stumble on;), which that member is not posting anymore... hmmmm.. very interesting, posibly because that person was a fake, with another user name, just tryin to stirr some shizz:naughty:...

IMO, we can research all we want, but we are forced to rely on seller's morals to an extent as well. Afterall, they are the ones in touch with the fishermen that go out and get these guys. Honest sellers that accurately represent their 'product' are key to acquiring quality cichla.
