well i have been wondering this for a while now, how do you tell the difference between pbass varients? can anyone show me some things to look for in determining the type. also pictures would be helpful, young and old pbass. this may also help cut down the number of ID threads as well. Thanks

young P-bass are pretty generic 90% will have 3 spots and be ocel, mono, and a very rare orino, The more rare other variants have a solid line horizontally

A lot of people would like their young Pbass IDed. I admit, I'm guilty of that. They only thing I know is that Monos, Ocells, and sometimes Orinos look the same when they are small. Tems have a solid black line going down through their bodies.

Ok.... lol

Ocellaris' dorsal fin looks more like one fin, the "dip" down is not as low as monos. Also ocellaris will tend to have red eyes 24/7. some get red eyes around 3" some don't display them until 6"... So thats not always the best way to tell.

Monos have a pretty noticeable sloping head and the deeper "dip" in the dorsal fin.

It keeps getting harder and harder to ID Monos and ocellaris. All the ones bought from LFS are farm breds... So pretty much they are not a 100% mono or ocellaris... Now even Tems are breeding with Monos... So really farm bred cichla are their own sp. just like Florida cichla!

Orinos just have a different body shape all together... Some will have gold around each spot, some won't. Orinos eyes are also bigger than monos or ocellaris.

Tems have an elongated body and a solid lateral line.

That should help on the basic ones.... The others are pretty rare so it's not worth describing... :)

thanks for all the help,im going to try and ID mine know that i know how to tell the difference.
well i think they are monos cause their dorsal fins have a pretty big dip in them. does dots on the dorsal fin mean anything?

Cool!

No spots on the dorsal don't mean anything. All cichla have it! ;)

Go ahead and try but you bring up a good point. Some people don't feel comfortable with their judgement on what it is so they ask for second and third opinions. So really I don't see Id threads cutting down. But it's ok because it makes up 50% of this section and keeps things going. :)

No one really knows what those look like when young.... They could just look like a common Mono... Then when breeding comes BHAM! Red all over! :)
