3 months after the OP, here's an unexpected update. The two little syno's I rescued from the mbuna feeding frenzy are growing out nicely in my little tetra tank. They've doubled in size, and almost certainly are S. lucipinnis rather than S. petricolas.

But .... last week I was rearranging the rock work in my African tank - and suddenly there's the one that I thought had gotten eaten 3 months ago - swimming happily around and showing similar growth. I definitely saw it disappear into another fish's mouth 12 weeks ago - so I can only assume that the acei spat it out again (too many spines perhaps?). Since then it's been keeping itself very well hidden. So its survival skills are obviously better than I had thought.

It's stuff like this that really makes me love this hobby. At times it can get frustrating, and there are moments of panic when everything goes wrong, but these fascinating creatures never cease to surprise me.
