my boy and i had a debate about the hobby today can you guys help. here it goes -- i have a 180 with a few fronts dats and sevs all about 3-5 inches-- my filtration is 2 fx-5 and 1 xp4 hooked up to a supersized uv sterilizer. in the xp4 i have lava rock and i clean that once a year--one fx5 i have nothing but carbon that i change every 2 months and in the other fx5 i have it stuffed with scrubbies that i clean every 3 months religiously when i clean the fx5 with the scrubbies i "rinse" the gunk and goo off inside the filter water then i dump the dirty water rinse out the fx5 then i fill the fx5 with water siphoned out of from the tank---my boy believes that im killing off the good bacteria because the scrubbies are exposed to the air which isn't good according to him---i say because i rinse the scrubbies in the old water and fill up the fx5 with aquarium water my bacteria is not affected ---my fish are happy and healthy water is crystal clear like the fish are suspended in mid-air----WHO IS RIGHT ON THIS ONE THERE'S A CASE OF BEER ON THE LINE LOL

I do the same thing! Rinse in tank water and fill back up with tank water. Water parameters are perfect. So you are correct. Now if you left them sitting out of water and let them dry out then you would probably be losing your good bacteria.

THANKS i'm calling him right now

I couldn't agree more. Rinse and fill with tank water. Keep them wet. No good if they dry out!

I think it's time for you to collect your case of beer, T.B.K.
