Where the Simpsons takes place
I've been researching an answer for this question the past week, I can not find any answers!
If I bred salvini cichlids that came from the same parents will their young have health problems? I know mammals do, but what about fish?
I need an answer because I am getting ready to breed salvini's!
Here is my male at this moment, he is a little scared so his color is a little dull. He much more colorful than this.

If you continually breed from the same line over many generations, you may run into some problems, but just once shouldn't hurt.

BTW, the black substrate is probably responsible for the dark color your salvini has taken on. I'd switch to something a bit more natural and he should brighten up a bit.

Oh no, believe me he has much more color than this. I have another photo of him in my album with the same substrate and he has twice more color. He is a bit camera shy.

I don't think it will be a problem either, if you are doing that this one time. I have never seen a deformity due to breeding in the same line, but as with nature, you may never know when it will happen.

No problem if done once .... That is one way to set a genetic line .....
When I breed, raised and showed fancy guppies... that was the main way to develop a new guppy strain.
But continual breeding of siblings will result in all kinds of problems genetically.
After that first sibling cross you can use selective breeding for the desired traits.
Or even a back cross to the parents ... but that leads to another story ....
Don't worry about that first sibling cross, because you don't know the genetic background of the fish anyway. But if you get deformed fish from that spawn .... IMO I would get a new batch of fish from somewhere /someone else.

Shouldn't be a problem...but check out the offspring. If there a bunch of genetic deformities, then you have your answer.

It's not so much that sibling/related fish spawn together but whether the line has (unwanted) genetic anamolies that are being concentraded...
