Now that I work part-time at the LFS here, I've been exposed to a whole plethora of 'interesting' characters. Some people are ready and willing to learn, others challenge you and question what you say, while still others flat out ignore what you tell them.

I'm just curious if you've personally ignored the advice of another hobbyist, and if so, what happened? Lets hear your stories!

I personally have done this a few times, and while it sometimes works out, there are times I wish I had payed better attention and done what was said. I've learned that its best to ask questions, cover your bases, and take the advice of others who have been there, done that.

I didn't put weights on my lid once when I had a silver arowana, thought it would be alright. Thankfully I was there when it happened, but it definitely needed weights on it. Close call for sure. Almost cost my arowana its life because I ignored some advice. Never again! :headbang2

^ Did anybody hear something?!?!?!

I actually ignore people all the time, Im stubborn and like learning through trial and error. I usually listen to DIY and water chemistry advice BUT completely ignore what people say about fish combos and how to treat illness...

I can relate to that. Sometimes trial and error is the only way TO learn. When someone tells you not to mix some predators with prey though, its generally a good idea to listen.

People told me that keepig a breeding paire it not all it is cracked up to be. They were right I had a pair of blue acaras nothing but problems.

exacty what happened, he tried to mix the IT with an Oscar :screwy:

I like to make my own mistakes.. but I also like to help others to avoid the mistakes I've made. I generally don't listen to "adult size" but use it as a "well if they for some reason DO manage to get that big, I'll know what I'm gonna need" tips and tricks for getting finicky eaters to eat I'll usually listen to if it's not complete BS. Some people I just don't listen to, and others I know I can take their advise to the bank. Tank compatability I'll usually be mindful of.. but each fish is individual, unless it's blatently obvious after abit of pondering that it's logical that the species won't get along.

When I first started here I was keeping a log of how my Spotted Pike Characin was doing in a 150g with a Florida Gar. I thought I was going in a positive direction and was trying to prove the experts wrong... they told me it might work for a while but eventually they would need to be seperated.

Six months later my gar is twice as big and my characin has not grown an inch. The characin has been moved to a smaller tank and is trying to grow his tail back.
